How Safe is it to Scrap your Car?
With many people now turning to the internet to scrap their cars, it can be difficult to know which companies to trust and whether they will dispose of your vehicle properly and safely.
If you’re unsure about the process, you can explore our wider car maintenance guidance hub for trusted advice on scrapping, selling and maintaining your vehicle the right way.
Most car scrapping websites will provide you with an instant quote and promise to collect your vehicle within days, but they must also abide by strict legal requirements when disposing of it.
Legal requirements for scrapping a car
Legislation introduced by the Government means that any car sent to be scrapped must go to an Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF). All scrapyards must hold a valid licence issued by the Environment Agency.
This ensures vehicles are dismantled in an environmentally responsible way and recycled appropriately. Without this regulation, hazardous materials such as oils, batteries and other fluids could be disposed of incorrectly.

Certificate of Destruction (CoD)
Once your vehicle has been scrapped properly, you should receive an official Certificate of Destruction (CoD) from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA). Only authorised ATFs can issue this document.
Without a CoD, you could still be liable for vehicle tax or traffic penalties, and may even receive a fine. The scrapping company should notify the DVLA that you are no longer responsible for the vehicle. For additional peace of mind, you can also complete the relevant section of your V5C logbook and send it to the DVLA yourself.
Cash payments are illegal
If a dealer offers to pay you in cash for your scrap car, this should raise immediate red flags.
Under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act (introduced in 2013), it is illegal to pay cash for scrap vehicles. Legitimate companies will only pay via bank transfer or cheque. This provides a clear financial record and helps protect both parties.
Proof of ID and tax refunds
When scrapping your car, you will need to provide valid proof of identification, such as a driving licence or passport. This is another legal safeguard to prevent fraud and ensure vehicles are processed correctly.
If you have remaining road tax on your vehicle, you may be entitled to a refund. This can be arranged directly with the DVLA once the vehicle has been officially scrapped.
