Mercedes-Benz and Rivian have announced plans to explore a strategic partnership focused on the production of large electric vans.
The proposed joint venture aims to meet growing demand for cleaner and more sustainable commercial vehicles while helping both manufacturers expand their electric vehicle offerings.
Plans for a New Electric Van Facility
Under the proposal, Mercedes-Benz and Rivian intend to establish a new electric-only production facility by utilising an existing Mercedes-Benz manufacturing site in Central or Eastern Europe.
The facility would support the production of next-generation electric vans designed for commercial customers across a variety of industries.
Two New Electric Vans Planned
The partnership outlines plans for two separate electric van models:
- One van based on Mercedes-Benz’s forthcoming electric van architecture.
- One van based on Rivian’s second-generation light van platform.
Both vehicles would be produced at the same facility, allowing the companies to share manufacturing expertise and improve efficiency.
Building on Existing EV Experience
Mercedes-Benz already offers several electric commercial vehicles, including the eVito, eSprinter and EQV.
Rivian, meanwhile, has developed electric delivery vans through its collaboration with Amazon and continues to expand its presence within the commercial EV sector.
The proposed partnership would enable both manufacturers to accelerate development while leveraging a new generation of electric vehicle technology.
A Shared Vision for Electrification
According to both companies, the partnership reflects a common ambition to accelerate the transition towards sustainable transport solutions.
Mercedes-Benz Vans Chief, Mathias Geisen, said:
“We are sharing investments and technology because we also share the same strategic ambition: accelerating the electrification of the van market with sustainable and superior products for our customers.”
By working together, both manufacturers believe they can increase production efficiency and help make electric vans more accessible to commercial operators focused on reducing total ownership costs.
Rivian’s Perspective
Rivian Chief Executive Officer RJ Scaringe also welcomed the announcement, highlighting the importance of collaboration within the electric vehicle industry.
He stated:
“Rivian was created to encourage the world to transition away from fossil fuel consumption by creating compelling products and services. We’re delighted to be partnering with Mercedes-Benz on this project.”
Scaringe added that combining Rivian’s electric vehicle expertise with Mercedes-Benz’s manufacturing experience could help deliver innovative commercial vehicles that benefit both customers and the environment.
What Happens Next?
At present, the companies have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which outlines their intention to pursue a strategic partnership.
Before production can begin, the agreement remains subject to:
- Final binding contracts
- Regulatory approvals
- Detailed project planning
If these steps are completed successfully, the partnership could play an important role in expanding the electric commercial vehicle market over the coming years.
