What Happens When You Scrap a Car? The UK Process Explained

Step 1: Choosing an Authorised Treatment Facility

Step 2: Arranging Collection or Drop-Off

- Dropped off at the scrapyard

Step 3: DVLA Notification and Deregistration

Once the DVLA is notified, a Certificate of Destruction (CoD) is issued.

- The car cannot return to the road

Step 5: What Happens to the Car Next?
After scrapping:
- Usable parts may be removed and recycled
- Fluids and hazardous materials are disposed of safely
- Remaining materials are crushed and recycled
